Wood for Pellets

01. 25, 2022

Biomass, specifically wood pellets, is part of the solution to climate change as we move away from fossil fuels. The energy industry is increasingly using this fuel to replace non-renewable resources in order to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Wood for pellets is considered an ideal raw material that will allow you to get efficient. Manufacturers use sawdust, wood chips, shavings, stumps and other woodworking waste with a natural moisture content of about 40%.

The manufacturing process consists of removing moisture, drying, grinding the material and compressing it into a cylindrical shape. High temperature and pressure causes lignin, a component in natural wood, to acquire the properties of an adhesive that binds the processed fractions together, forming the appropriate shape. The result is a dry, highly compressed product that can be transported over long distances without the risk of spoiling it.

In power plants, pellets are treated in the same way as coal. They are ginded into dust, the dust is combined with air, and the resulting mixture is continuously fed into the flame, which creates steam to generate electricity

When a sawmill processes a log, many by-products are produced. The main product is sawn timber, which consumes an average of 45% of each log. Between 30 and 35% of each log goes to pulp, which is sold as raw material for pulp mills. Between 20 and 25% of each log becomes sawdust and shavings, which are used to make pellets.

And 5 to 10% of a log is bark, which is mainly used for energy for drying lumber and but it can also be used in lower quality pellets. Pellet wood, which is used without residue, has allowed sawmills to improve the use of forests and maximize both jobs and the value of the forest.

If environmentally friendly fuel did not gain more and more popularity every year, then this material would simply be burned and disposed of, without bringing any benefit.

Granules, in their essence, are beneficial not only from the side of ecology, but in economic terms. Since wood for pellets is produced in large quantities, the cost of raw materials is low, and therefore the final price of fuel is also not very high, especially if you buy in bulk.
